Starting Out with SAM

1. Registering

In order to use most of the features of SAM, each user needs to be registered with the system. To register,  please fill in the SAM AutoRegistration Form. You will be notified when you have been registered.

2. Initial setup

To use SAM, the user needs to do some basic UPS setups first:

$ setup n32 #IRIX only
$ setup sam
$ setenv SAM_STATION <station_name>

On d0mino, the <station_name>s is central-analysis. These will be setup in a more formal way when the concept of  station is  further developed in future SAM releases.

3. Quick Troubleshooting Guide

A quick way to check if the servers are  running properly is to use the following command:

sam locate file foo

This command will locate the file foo in the sam system. The normal response, when everything is working properly, should be:

The File Servant is alive.
No such file: foo

To verify that the FSS, used only for step 4 - storing data files,   is running and operational, the user can type:

$sam dump fss

A typical response will be:

File Storage Server Dump:
Stagers are known at nodes: d02ka.fnal.gov
34 requests submitted, 31 done, 1 failed, 0 resubmitted
File Store requests:

 ... then a long list of transferred files ...

If you see something other than these responses, then there is probably a problem which needs to be fixed. Send mail to
sam-design@fnal.gov

4. sam-users@fnal.gov

Once you begin using SAM, you will benefit from involvement in the user feedback that occurs on the sam-users@fnal.gov mailing list. You can register yourself on this mail list by simply sending email to the FNAL mailserver by following the link below. Or, if you are opposed to adding yourself to "yet-another-mail-list", all messages to the mail list are available via a Hypermail archive. This archive allows you to sort by author, by date, or by subject.

Note that you are automatically subscribed to the sam-users@fnal.gov mailing list when you register using the SAM AutoRegistration Form.
